Twitter AbbreviationsRemember those days when SMS text messages rule the day? Back then per text messages were capped at 160 chars/SMS. Twitter is now the new rage with all the abbreviations being coined and used by many users. With 140 chars max, abbv is a necessary. The list below is not complete but it is popular and you should these twitter abbreviations commonly being used.

PS: because of the popularity of this post, I’m going to continue adding new abbreviations coined by tweeples, so there will be more than 100 here :)

@username – Reply to
DM @username – Direct Message
PRT – Partial Retweet or Please Retweet
RT – Retweet
# – hash tag in front of the word. A way to organize and find relevant tweets. e.g. #iphone4, #NBA, #android

IIRC – If I remember correctly

Mention – similar to Interaction. When someone mention your twitter handle/username (i.e. @imstash), it is good etiquette to thank them.
MT – Modified Tweet
mil – million
Mistweet – A tweet that was sent in error or that one later regrets.
NSFW – Not Safe For Work
OH – Overheard
ORLY- Oh Really?!!
OMFG – Oh My F–king God
OMG – Oh My God
peeps – people
pple or ppl – people
PWN – ownage, owned
PRT – Partial Retweet (at the start of a tweet) or Please Retweet
#PIN – Pinterest
RT – Retweet
RTF – Read The FAQ. RTFF shows up too. RTF also stands for Rich Text File.
RTFM – Read The F-ing Manual
RTHX – Thanks For The ReTweet
RTQ – Read The Question or Retweet Question
SMH- Shaking My Head
SNAFU – Situation Normal All F–ked Up
SOB – Son Of a Bitch
S/O – Shout Out (to acknowledge someone, a public expression of thanks or gratitude, or call for attention to your followers)
STFU – Shut The F–k Up
STFW – Search The F —ing Web
Ur – your
TIA – thanks in advance
Tweet Out – similar to Shout Out (used commonly to promote a product)
TMB – Tweet Me Back
TMI – Too Much Information
Trend- A topic “Trending” or “popular” right now on Twitter
TTYS – Talk to you soon
TTYL – Talk to you later
Twadd – To add someone as a Twitter friend
Twaffic – Twitter traffic
Twaiting – Twittering while waiting
Twaunt – Taunting someone over Twitter
Tweekend – Spending your weekend on Twitter
Tweeps – People on Twitter
TYT – Take your time.
